The Restaurant at Middleton Place

A Modern Architectural Treasure of the Lowcountry

The Inn at Middleton Place

The Inn at Middleton Place

Set on a bluff overlooking the Ashley River, The Inn at Middleton Place is a 55-room riverfront retreat just outside historic downtown Charleston. Acquired by Bennett Hospitality in June 2025 and managed by Salamander Collection, The Inn offers a serene Lowcountry escape neighboring one of the region’s most iconic landmarks.

Originally opened in 1987, The Inn is celebrated as one of the Lowcountry’s most treasured works of modern architecture. Designed by renowned architect WG Clark, it received the American Institute of Architecture’s highest awards and established Clark’s national reputation. Its intentional design blends seamlessly into the natural environment, with spacious rooms featuring dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in.

Every overnight stay at The Inn at Middleton Place includes complimentary access to Middleton Place National Historic Landmark, connected by a scenic riverfront walkway. Guests can explore 110 acres of gardens envisioned in 1741 by Henry Middleton to reflect the grand classical style of Europe and England, alongside a house museum, stable yards, and Eliza’s House, an African American freedman’s dwelling that shares the essential stories of those who lived and labored on the land.

As part of its new chapter, Salamander Collection also oversees The Restaurant at Middleton Place and The Pavilion event venue, enhancing the seamless connection between The Inn, the gardens, and the surrounding history.

Middleton Place Foundation

Middleton Place Foundation

While closely linked in setting, Middleton Place Foundation operates independently from The Inn. The Foundation oversees Middleton Place National Historic Landmark, which welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually. Through immersive tours, artisan demonstrations, and educational programs, the site offers a deeper understanding of American history.

Middleton Place is home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens, first envisioned in 1741, and spans three centuries of one family’s history, including a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Equally essential are the stories of the more than 3,200 enslaved people who lived and labored on Middleton properties—histories that are preserved and interpreted throughout the site.
Today, Middleton Place encompasses 110 acres of gardens and historic grounds, along with the House Museum, stable yards, and Eliza’s House, offering a meaningful experience that blends beauty, reflection, and education.
